I Have A Great Family - 1218 Words

Rodney. Session 1. Journal I have a great family, that I can truly say love me, support me and stand by me 100%. In my younger years I was raised by my mother who was a single mother of two children. Growing up for me not only in the United States but in Brooklyn, New York was difficult at times. My mother is Haitian and her children are American. She tried hard to instal the values and traditions she had growing up in Haiti but being in a different country made it difficult and caused a lot of conflicts. I have to say that as a child I didn’t understand my mother or appreciate her sacrifice and hard work to raise two children on her own. My mother was a very hard working women and would work long hard hours to be able to provide for us. She tried her best to install in me the importance of work and education. But yet as a young black man being raised in America I needed and wanted more then she could give or provide. I wanted to be the same as everyone else, I wanted to fit in, with me friends and peers. However with all she’d given it just wasn t enough for me as a young man and I needed and wanted more from her and life. I feel like now looking back at my younger years I was confused at what was really important. I wanted to fit in and be just as American as the rest of my friends, my peers, my neighbors. At that time I felt that having the latest and the greatest was all that mattered.
