Dog Whistle Politics Of The 1960s - 2333 Words
Jacob Garbison Professor Sean Trundle History 355 4 December 2014 Dog Whistle Politics of the 1960s On July 2, after signing the 1964 Civil Rights Act, President Lyndon B. Johnson reportedly said to his staff, ââ¬Å"I think we just gave the South to the Republicans for your lifetime and mine.â⬠(Perlstein 365) He was wrong. Although he never lived to see it, Jimmy Carter won a Democratic South in 1976 - but it was for the last time. Nonetheless, the party which had dominated the South for almost a century had put it up for grabs with the stroke of a pen. The impact of racism on presidential politics during the ââ¬Ë60s is difficult to overstate. Race and racially coded language in particular played a profound role in the GOPs success at winningâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Here, Wallace did something new. Gone were the overt references to white supremacy, segregation, or even race. Instead, he positioned himself as a defender of the constitution against tyrannical government overreach: ââ¬Å"I stand here today, as Governor of this sovereign State, and refuse to willingly submit to illegal usurpation of power by the Central Government.â⬠[1] Wallace went on, giving voice to the politics of the South in language that was palpable, even agreeable, to the North. The dramatic ââ¬Å"Stand in the Doorâ⬠was all for show of course. Wallace stood aside, allowing three black students to register for classes later that day, but the effects of the speech would have wide repercussions. Wallace received nearly 100,000 telegrams in response to his speech from all across the country, an almost unheard of number for a lowly Southern governor. More shocking still was that nearly all of them, about 95%, were praising his bravery. (Lopez, 15) ââ¬Å"They all hate black people, all of them.â⬠Wallace reportedly exclaimed, ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re all afraid, all of them Great God! Thatââ¬â¢s it! Theyââ¬â¢re all Southern. The whole US is Southern!â⬠(Lopez, 15) Wallace had discovered the dog whistle, a way to communicate racial animosity without using explicit racism. This is a distinctly modern expression of racism which, as Ian Haney Lopez says, ââ¬Å"[stimulates] the intended audience without overtly

Spirit Leader Free Essays
To many cheerleading may not be considered a sport, however what those many people may not understand, is that like all sports it requires the same key components to succeed. The cheerleaders that are serious about this sport understand that many elements are needed in making a ââ¬Å"die-hardâ⬠cheerleader. I would say these elements are dedication, commitment, heart and soul. We will write a custom essay sample on Spirit Leader or any similar topic only for you Order Now It is with these concepts that separate who continues with their sport and who quits at the first sign of difficulty. I would like to be the ââ¬Å"Spirit Leaderâ⬠of our cheerleading team this season. One reason Iââ¬â¢d make a great choice for this position, is that I would be dedicated to the team, and wonââ¬â¢t give up when faced with an obstacle. To me, extra practicing, time spent making bows and signs, banners, or our spirit can, is not work, but a privilege. These tasks would not bother or frustrate me, as it would better all of us. I want to be apart of leading the team, and helping us all grow not only as individuals but as a family. Even though Iââ¬â¢m fairly new at cheering, my enthusiasm and dedication is great, and would help toward making our team spirit soar this year. I remember as I walked into the first tryout day, last year, how nervous and inexperienced I was, and intimidated by the ones that ââ¬Å"knew it allâ⬠. I believe my cheer skills have progressed over time. Even though Iââ¬â¢m far from perfect, if I continue to learn and get better, it can help me better the teamââ¬â¢s motivation and spirit this season. And bring spirit, love and motivation in leading the team and giving other girls someone to look up to. Being the spirit leader wouldnââ¬â¢t just be my job for the team, but the opportunity to inspire the girls with activities, challenges, and cheering together as a team. I would like to help keep our team connected, keep our cheerleader spirit alive, and have pride in our school. Thereââ¬â¢s always a time and place for fun, but being focused and keeping the big picture in mind is what is going to make us outshine the rest. We need to motivate our peers, keep the spirit flowing through the halls. Cheerleading isnââ¬â¢t just being a team, but a family. A Spirit Leader should have a positive attitude toward everything. Whether a stunt falls, or the music stops, I would be the motivating factor in keeping our team from falling apart. I need to show these girls spirit and motivate them in all aspects. If accepted to be the Spirit Leader of our team, I plan to execute the suggestions of our coach into making a spirit can, and a sign for the school of the weekly sport games. Also, I have ideas involving our ââ¬Å"little sistersâ⬠for JV this year. As well as continuing to brain storm a list of other activities. I want to make this a phenomenal season full of spirit, laughter and love. To keep our school spirit up and running all season, I would like to try and get everyone involved; students, staff, faculty, athletes, families, and the community. To make the best of this year, we need to have support from majority of these people. Those are the people that look up to us, cheerleaders, to bring the spirit to school functions. As a Spirit Leader, I want to make a change in our school and community. That will take more dedication from everyone, especially myself, but Iââ¬â¢m willing to do it. Cheerleading, to me, isnââ¬â¢t just about standing on sidelines yelling cheers, but about a group of people supporting another group through their spirit. It may not be about bows or matching outfits, either, but about how people can come together to achieve something great. Finally, itââ¬â¢s not just all about the ââ¬Ëperfectââ¬Ë routine, but about all coming together and loving each other as a family. We can make a difference. I hope in your time reading this, I have helped you realize that I would be a great Spirit Leader for our cheerleading team. I am a team player, a motivator, and girl with lots of spirit! No matter what, we are a team and weââ¬â¢re all in this together. With my concentration, focus, dedication and time, I will help make our Chittenango Varsity Cheerleading teamââ¬â¢s spirit shine, and bring our team together as one. ABC And Traditional Costing Approach Samples for Students â⬠MyAssignme
Question: Discuss about the ABC And Traditional Costing Approach. Answer: Introduction A method facilitating in conveying expenditure to each component of organization is termed as costing. The main purpose of this report is to appraise the two approaches used by the companies that is Activity Based costing and traditional costing. An effective costing system is the one which can minimize the waste using the information given by the system. Hence to obtain absolute benefits of the resources it should be used cost-effectively. Traditional Costing System In this costing approach cost is allocated as per activity basis and therefore product cost is indistinct. According to this approach cost is incurred on its manufacturing when a product is manufactured. The approach followed is not completely valid since these theories not extent to work which are not completely related to the product. Main difficulty with this method is, it consigns expenses completely to the product. This theory does not have many indirect cost pools for each branch. In traditional costing, expenses are initially related with cost centers afterwards to products. Activity Based costing This accounting method assigns cost to activities and not to a particular product or services. ABC method takes operating expenses, utilization of resources and productiveness of resources is obtained from the information system of the company which is collectively by the management. This approach was formed with the purpose to decipher troubles dealed in traditional costing approach (Innes, Mitchell and Sinclair, 2000). Traditional costing approach allocates cost on the averaging basis which is altogether different in ABC since overhead are allocated by forming a liaison between cost and its related activity. Difference in two costing methods Total overhead is allocated to each product using indirect methods in traditional costing while in ABC cost is held as direct cost and appropriation is completed rationally to individual service or product which shows definite usage of cost for every product. Exhaustive information is required of all the resources in ABC though in traditional costing total overhead cost is required as straightforward allocation is done. Different elements of cost are defined by ABC for diversified range of products. Conversely traditional costing recognizes fewer classes for cost components. Strengths and weakness of ABC Strengths ABC facilitate in distinguishing products which utilize less resources manager can take decisions relating to price of product efficiently. Activity Based Costing can discover cost-effective products which facilitate the manager to eradicate the products not creating higher profit and consuming major amount of resources thus escalating the effectiveness with no added consumption of resources. One of the significant benefits of ABC is evaluation of individual product or service precisely. ABC facilitate in recognizing products or activities which are not generating profits making it a instrument for decision making by the management (Turney, 1992). Weakness Main criticism about ABC is exploitation of information. Productivity of ABC requires diverse information which requires huge resources. Since ABC requires information additional problem arises in gathering and dealing with the information. Kaplan and Anderson (2003), also believe this dilemma and recommended that desertion is not the solution. Management also confronts challenge to alter the arrangement of organization for successful implementation of ABC. The major cause for the amplified disapproval against ABC is prolonged schedule of time, scantiness of computer resources and surpassing budget (Cohen, 2005). Conclusion Both methods are uniformly significant for analyzing product cost. ABC is used as an alternate to traditional costing. The significance of ABC is to examine the non value adding products and other supporting activities. The main purpose of using this method is it reduces the cost, develop the process and other activitys based on precedence. ABC can be useful in every organization. Such as entity can assign its advertisement cost straightly to product where cost is used and hence providing a accurate image in comparison to traditional costing. Hence it can be said that company should adopt Activity based costing for better presentation. References Cohen, S. Venieris, G. Kaimenaki, E. (2005). ABC: adopters, supporters, deniers and unawares. Enterprise System Sales and Production
Question: Discuss about theEnterprise System fo Sales and Production. Answer: What are the Key Goals IGT Wanted to Achieve Using an ERP System? The primary reason why ICT wanted to adopt the new EPR system was to enhance the efficiency of its operations. This efficiency was to encompass both production activities and information access by its employees in various departments such as finance, sales, and production. Before this integrations, the information was disintegrated accessing it was very exhausting. Therefore, this scattering of information is what prompted the adaptation of EPR. The EPR system contains a set of core business applications entailing finance, production, distribution and human resource all integrated together. According to IGT, this move was undertaken purely for business basis and not to cope with technology. Therefore, the key goals they wanted to achieve with this decision was to have in place a cohesive information technology set-up that would permit their growth. Additionally, just like many other large-scale manufacturers, the wanted a system which would have smooth integration of information. Thi s system enabled the company to monitor all of their departments and enhanced the linking of the main company to its subordinate branches. In summary, the companys primary goal while embracing this new system was to improve efficiency and effectiveness of its various operations. This ranges from production to customers order processing. The Pros and Cons to Customizing the System When adopting a new structure, the management should consider how the system fits the organizations operations. This is the element of complementary; this new system should adequately address the film's requirement. The decision made by IGT to implement SAP displays good coordination and efficient planning among the management because this system had the capabilities of being customized. However, customization has its advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage of customizing the system is that you can set the system to fit into your demands. This eradicates the possibilities of outsourcing or using disintegrated systems. Therefore, when you customize a system, it fits perfectly into your organizations needs. This is what IGT did; they aligned the system to serve their operations. However, there are disadvantages of customizing. First, you must have the technical skills to execute this activity. Furthermore, you must enter all of your firms information and specifics into the sys tem which is not an easy process. IGT had to assemble a team of individuals from its order group and engineering department to overcome this problem. The team was had to customize the system to handle the complex activities of the company. Therefore, successful customizing of a system requires the involvement of people from different sector within a firm. The operation is tedious and time-consuming. However, it is very vital to align the system to adequately address organization needs since it improves the efficiency of operations. How Should IGT Handle Change Management During ERP Implementation? According to Reiss (2012, p.3), there are three formal features which describe the nature of change. These features are complexity, omnipresence, and prominence. Therefore, when managing change, the management should be aware of these key features. There are several issues that IGT should handle during the change management process. The most vital thing that the company executives should acknowledge is that managing change in a collaborative activity and requires participation from all the companys stakeholders. This includes even the workers and the customers. Firstly, they should ensure that they train all the employees on this new prospect. This will make their employees be conversant with the new systems requirement and adjust accordingly. Training, in this case, entails how to use the new structure and elaborating on its importance. Customers play a vital role in the way a company handles its operations. Therefore, IGT should enlighten their clients on this new development. For example, the clients should be made aware of the reduction in the number of days for processing rush orders to four weeks from seven. This will enable them to adapt effectively to this new approach. Finally, the management should ensure that they incorporate positive attitude in their workers and clients to improve the acceptability of this new system. Reference List Reiss, M., 2012. MMR Vaccine and Autism free essay sample
Vaccine and Autism There is a lot of controversy surrounding the MMR vaccine and whether or not it causes Autism. One of the main advocates for causation is Andrew Wakefield. He performed a study in 1998 that consisted of 12 children. Such a small sample group alone is enough for this mother to doubt the validity of his study. I may not be a scientist, but I do know that the larger the sample group is, the more valid the results are going to be. According to http://www. thpc. scot. nhs. uk/Health_Protection/MMR/ AW%20claims. htm, Wakefields theory was this: MMR immunisation leads to measles irus becoming colonised in the lining of the bowel; this process causes inflammatory bowel disease and a leaky bowel; this allows harmful peptides or toxins, which wouldnt normally be absorbed to enter the bloodstream, enter the brain and cause autism. All 12 children had intestinal abnormalities, ranging from lymphoid nodular hyperplasia to aphthoid ulceration. Histology showed patchy chronic inflammation in the colon in 11 children and reactive ileal lymphoid hyperplasia in seven, but no granulomas. Behavioural disorders included autism (nine), disintegrative psychosis (one), and possible postviral or vaccinal encephalitis (two). There were no focal neurological abnormalities and MRI and EEG tests were normal. Abnormal laboratory results were significantly raised urinary methylmalonic acid compared with agematched controls ow haemoglobin in four children, and a low serum IgA in four children. However, this study has since been retracted and Mr. Wakefield stripped of his medical license. He has been accused of falsifying his findings and the backgrounds (including the fact that 3 were already showing signs of autism before being vaccinated) of the children involved in his study. According to the CDC (http:// www. cdc. gov/vaccinesafety/concerns/autism/) a scientific review by the Institute of Medicine (10M) concluded that the evidence favors rejection of a causal relationship etween thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism. CDC supports the 10M conclusion that there is no relationship between vaccines containing thimerosal and autism rates in children. For a lot of people, the CDC is the final word of expertise on the subject. For others, like actor
